| Klimasauskas Group has been deeply involved in manufacturing for many years. One of our staff, Casey Klimasauskas, was an early employee of American Robot after it moved to Pittsburgh (1982). There he developed a teach-pendant based language for programming the Merlin series of Robots. He was also involved in the development of a real-time operating system that was delivered with the first of the Merlin Robots. In 1984, Casey Klimasauskas joined a wholly owned subsidiary of American Robot, American Industrial Vision. There he was involved in the proto-type development of three projects: Real-time Adaptive Welding using the welding head and image processing system produced by Meta Machines Ltd (acquired), and integrating this into the motion control of the Merlin Robot. Part Tracking and Location using the IRI (defunct) SIMD image processing machine. In this capacity, he used basic building blocks to develop algorithms specific to the applications. These were developed as demonstration systems for key customers. Part Inspection systems based on the Visual Machines Limited (defunct) technology, which later formed the basis for the Argus vision system. The technology originally developed by Visual Machines Limited was used for identifying and classifying chromosomes. American Industrial Vision worked in partnership with Visual Machines to extend their application into industry. Casey was deeply involved in the transfer of image understanding technology from Visual Machines Limited to American Industrial Vision. In another application, Casey worked closely with hardware engineers on the development of the front end image processing hardware for a very high speed visual inspection system. He was responsible for taking the pre-processed data from the front end hardware and using it to classify objects into multiple categories at the rate of 40 per second. Casey also worked on a system that did whole image classification using a signature derived from a 2-dimensional FFT. The signature was interpreted by a neural network to perform rapid classification of images, and potential faults. It was Casey's interest in image processing that initially led him to investigate Neural Networks as a method for solving some of the difficult problems in image recognition and interpretation.
